I'm a fan of the teeny tiny things in the world.
This aquarium was born in response to a challenge: when recent news came out on the discovery of the smallest fish in the world, a friend from our forum commented "I'm thinking that if this fish ever gets commercialized, Rony is bound to make a setup that'll need a magnifying lens." Well, here it is...

Dorkbot meetups tend to happen on first Wednesdays. People doing strange things with electricity gather to share ideas and get support on half made projects around the world. I'm going to be at the one in NYC that will have a focus on music that looks really good. Do you have a dorkbot in your neighborhood to go to? - Link

Mark had a problem, he had a broken ibook out of warranty and so he decided to fix it with fire!
Here's his great disclaimer: Now, to make things sure, this is NOT A HOW TO. If you set your house on fire because of this, don't come complain to me, okay? If you do attempt this, this is all AT YOUR OWN RISK. This really is the last thing you want to do to your iBook and the chance this operation succeeds is very little. [Video] - Link

Mike wins.
Mike Yates plays lasertag. Now, I'm not talking about the kind of game that you might get in on down at the Family Fun Center, amusement park, or around your neighborhood using some toy... Over the next 10 months, Mike and his pal/fellow laser hacker Duncan, designed and built the ultimate LTTO compatible IR weapons system. The Scorpion is Mil-spec from top to bottom. The most obvious feature is the 4 rocket magazine which attaches to the top of the weapon. 4 Mac pneumatic relay/solonoids control the airflow from the 3000psi air tank to the various rockets through stainless steel plumbing. - Link

Axecollector took apart a 9 volt batter.
I remember thinking at one point that a 9 volt battery was just a small box full of acid or something, but as you can clearly see, this one is is just constructed of six smaller 1.5 volt cells wired in series.
I've been collecting disclaimers lately and he's got a good one!
Disclaimer: I am not an electrician. There really isn't any easy way to hurt yourself doing this that I can think of, but I guess someone out there could probably find one anyway! This article is not intended as professional advice, and I take no responsibility for any harm this information may cause you now or in the future. There. I said it. Now go rip apart some 9 volts and see for yourself! [via] - Link

Hana means flower and kototba means word. The idea hear is that your flowers can talk to you. My Japanese ends there, but I'm curious about this little thing. I4U says, After placing the little fairy, which carries a sensor inside a plant pot, you can communicate with your plant through the big fairy. Buy touching the plant you trigger one of 200 phrases.[via] - Link

Check out this midi concertina made with a pic microcontroller.
I researched concertina building -- but only for a couple of hours. It took just that long to see that such a project (valves, reeds, bellows...) is WAY beyond my ambition.
Then in one of those "sychronicity" epiphanies, a lot of things at once suggested another approach: 1) My son, the NYU Jazz major, exposed me to MIDI technology. 2) A work buddy enthused about learning Programmable Interrupt Controller (PIC) programming. 3) I ran across Jordan Petkov's excellent site on building simple MIDI controllers using PICs. Paul Beard's made up a cool cigar box pinhole camera.
A brief overview of the cigar box pinhole camera I built yesterday and today.
Built around a 4x5 film holder. Focal length of about 30mm, pinhole of indeterminate size, f/stop 100-150, I think. So reasonably fast -- 1-2 second exposures in Sunny 16 conditions.
Lessons from Mk I that I tried to incorporate:
* use a smaller box so you can more easily remove the dark slides without muffing the shot
* tripod sockets are a good thing
* a shutter is also a good thing: using the dark slide a shutter not always effective. - Link
This then drives a 4024 7bit counter for seconds connected to a 4 input AND gate, half of a 4082, which in turn drives the clock input of another 4024 which counts minutes. A similar thing happens for minutes to hours. - Link

For years I've wanted to mess around with UV photography. Unfortunately, all the websites on DIY UV seem to assume an infinite amount of money and access to specialized equipment on my part. There are two things that I don't like, when someone tells me I HAVE to spend a lot of money (quartz lenses starting at $3000) or that i need specialized equipment (Wratten 18A filters, not cheap either). So I set out to do it my way, and here's my $5 solution to UV wavelength photography. - Link
Hmm, how big a chunk can i get out of a lightbulb so I can make a filter for my srl lenses!
